TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Purpose of The Bridge Fellowship

The Bridge Fellowship is a leadership and community development initiative created by KwaYa Australia in partnership with East African organisations, mentors and sponsors.

The purpose of the fellowship is to provide emerging leaders with opportunities for training, personal growth, practical experience and cross-cultural learning in Australia, with the expectation that participants will return home equipped to strengthen and serve their communities.

The Bridge is not simply a travel or migration opportunity. It is an investment in future leaders, changemakers and community builders.

1. Fellowship Expectations

Participants selected for The Bridge Fellowship are expected to:

  • Fully engage in their studies, training and placement opportunities

  • Represent KwaYa Australia and partner organisations with integrity and professionalism

  • Respect Australian laws, visa conditions and host expectations

  • Participate positively in cultural exchange and community life

  • Demonstrate maturity, responsibility and willingness to learn

  • Maintain regular communication with fellowship coordinators and mentors

  • Return to their home country at the completion of the fellowship program

  • Use the skills, knowledge and experience gained to contribute positively within their community

 

2. Commitment to Community Impact

A core principle of The Bridge Fellowship is that participants return home and apply their learning in meaningful ways.

Participants understand that the fellowship is designed to:

  • strengthen communities

  • develop local leadership

  • encourage long-term impact within East Africa

Successful applicants are therefore expected to demonstrate a genuine commitment to contributing to their communities following completion of the program.

This may include:

  • community leadership

  • mentoring others

  • establishing projects or initiatives

  • strengthening existing organisations

  • sharing professional skills and training

  • ongoing collaboration with local partners

3. Study and Training Responsibilities

Participants are responsible for:

  • maintaining satisfactory attendance and academic progress

  • completing assessments and training requirements

  • communicating honestly about any academic or personal difficulties

  • complying with all education provider policies and requirements

Failure to maintain satisfactory participation may place the fellowship arrangement at risk.

 

4. Visa Compliance

Participants must comply with all Australian visa conditions at all times.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • maintaining enrolment

  • complying with permitted work limitations

  • maintaining appropriate health insurance where required

  • obeying Australian laws

  • ensuring passport and visa documents remain current

Any serious breach of visa conditions may result in withdrawal from the fellowship program.

 

5. Employment and Work Placement

Some fellowship pathways may include part-time employment, vocational placements or work experience opportunities.

Participants understand that:

  • employment is not guaranteed unless specifically arranged

  • all work must comply with visa conditions and Australian workplace laws

  • participants are expected to behave professionally and responsibly within workplaces

  • repeated workplace misconduct may affect fellowship participation

 

6. Accommodation and Hosting

Participants staying with host families or within supported accommodation are expected to:

  • behave respectfully and responsibly

  • contribute positively to household life

  • respect cultural differences, routines and boundaries

  • communicate openly and honestly regarding any concerns

KwaYa Australia reserves the right to relocate participants if necessary for wellbeing, safety or program reasons.

 

7. Health, Wellbeing and Safety

Participants are encouraged to communicate any physical, emotional or mental health concerns that may affect their wellbeing or participation.

Participants agree to:

  • act responsibly regarding their personal safety

  • follow reasonable safety directions

  • seek assistance when needed

  • respect safeguarding and protection policies

KwaYa Australia may seek appropriate support or intervention if wellbeing concerns arise.

 

8. Behaviour and Representation

Participants are ambassadors of The Bridge Fellowship, KwaYa Australia and their home communities.

The following behaviours may result in removal from the program:

  • serious misconduct

  • illegal activity

  • violence or harassment

  • repeated dishonesty

  • discrimination or abusive behaviour

  • behaviour that places others at risk

  • actions that significantly damage the reputation or integrity of the fellowship

9. Media and Promotional Content

Participants may be photographed, filmed or interviewed during fellowship activities for promotional, educational and reporting purposes connected to The Bridge Fellowship and KwaYa Australia.

Reasonable care will be taken to represent participants respectfully and accurately.

Participants may request that specific sensitive content not be shared publicly.

10. Withdrawal or Termination

KwaYa Australia reserves the right to withdraw or terminate a participant’s involvement in The Bridge Fellowship where:

  • visa conditions are breached

  • serious misconduct occurs

  • participant wellbeing or safety is at risk

  • program expectations are repeatedly not met

  • false or misleading information has been provided

Where possible, concerns will first be discussed respectfully with the participant.

11. Acknowledgement

By participating in The Bridge Fellowship application and selection process, applicants acknowledge that they have read and understood these Terms & Conditions and agree to participate in the spirit, values and expectations of the program.
