What is The Bridge Fellowship?

The Bridge is a leadership and study fellowship supporting emerging young African leaders through vocational training, mentoring, cultural exchange and community connection in Australia.

The Fellowship is designed for young adults already making a difference in their communities and looking to grow in skill, confidence and leadership.

Who is The Bridge designed for?

The Fellowship is designed for emerging leaders from East Africa who are already showing initiative, responsibility and community involvement.

Applicants may come from backgrounds such as:

  • community services

  • disability support

  • aged care

  • youth leadership

  • education

  • community development

We are not simply looking for qualifications.
We are looking for people already showing up for others.

How long does the Fellowship last?

The Fellowship is currently designed as a two-year program, including vocational study, practical experience, mentoring and cultural exchange opportunities in Australia.

What does the Fellowship include?

The Fellowship may include:

  • vocational study in Australia

  • mentoring and personal support

  • practical work experience

  • leadership development

  • cultural exchange

  • community connection

  • participation in KwaYa community life

Is accommodation included?

Yes. With approved host families.

 

Is the Fellowship fully funded?

The Bridge is built around shared sponsorship and support.

Funding may include contributions toward:

  • tuition fees

  • accommodation

  • living expenses

  • mentoring and wellbeing support

  • participant preparation and administration

Each Fellowship arrangement may differ depending on sponsorship and program structure.

 

What is expected of Fellows?

Fellows are expected to actively participate in study, community life and personal development throughout the Fellowship.

The Fellowship exists to equip emerging leaders with skills, knowledge and experience that can be carried back into the communities they serve.

Do Fellows return home after the Fellowship?

Yes.

The Bridge is designed as a leadership development opportunity that strengthens communities through the return of skilled, experienced and connected young leaders.

What role do sponsors play?

Sponsors help create practical pathways for growth through financial support, encouragement and relationship.

Sponsors are not simply donors.
They become part of a meaningful journey alongside a Fellow.

What do sponsors receive?

Sponsors may receive:

  • updates and stories from the Fellowship journey

  • opportunities for personal connection

  • insight into the Fellow’s growth and study experience

  • the opportunity to support long-term community impact

Are sponsors responsible for the Fellow?

No.

KwaYa remains actively involved throughout the Fellowship and provides ongoing oversight, support and coordination.

Sponsors are not expected to manage visa matters, employment, study requirements or personal care responsibilities.

 

Can families or groups sponsor together?

Yes.

Some sponsorships may involve couples, families, churches, businesses or groups of friends contributing together.

 

How are Fellows selected?

Fellows are selected through an application and interview process.

Selection considers:

  • community involvement

  • leadership potential

  • personal character

  • commitment to growth and service

  • alignment with the goals of the Fellowship

 

Can Australians apply to become sponsors?

Yes.
